Do I Need a Permit for Dumpster Rental on my Property?
You’ve decided you need a dumpster for your next project. Depending on the location, you may need to obtain a permit. Certain cities require that junk removal projects have permits on public property. Here’s what you need to know.
When You’ll Need a Permit for a Dumpster Rental
Commercial & Public Property vs. Private Property
If you’re having a dumpster delivered and you’re planning on placing it on public property, the city you live in may put your project on hold until you have the right application completed.
If your roll off dumpster or dumpster bag (also referred to as a bagster) is completely on your own property, the project will not require a permit. When your dumpster is placed directly on a sidewalk, street or other public property you will need a right-of-way or street permit. If you need a dumpster due to a home addition or major renovation project you may have the necessary permits for the improvements you’re making. Dumpster rentals may even be covered by your permit.
How to Obtain a Permit
Where you live effects whether you’ll be responsible for finding a permit. In some cities, waste disposal/trash service companies are responsible for getting the permit. In other cities, it’s your responsibility. If you’re responsible, here’s what you’ll need to do:
1) Find Out If Your City Requires a Permit
A quick google search of your city name and the terms “right-of-way” or “street occupancy” should show you what the policy is where you live.
2) Contact Your Homeowner’s Association or Public Works Dept.
If you’re required to get a permit, contact the Public Works Department or Homeowner’s Association for your neighborhood. Talking with the right people can ensure you finish your project in a timely manner.
